A woman was directed to my register yesterday with a return. I looked at the item she had (some sort of practical joke "therapy flashcards" so you can "sound like a therapist without all the school.")
"I'm so sorry, ma'am, but this isn't something we carry in this store."
Customer: "I'm sure it came from here. He gave me a gift card to your store as well."
Me: Well, I've been in this store for 8 years, and I've never seen anything like this in here. But just to be sure, let me check the computer.
Now, I work in a bookstore. Most things have ISBNs, even the nonbook items. Sometimes, though we do have to use a UPC code. I tried the UPC code and several variations of keyword searches. No luck.
Me: "Ma'am, this isn't something we carry here. I've tried several different types of searches, and the computer isn't finding anything either."
Customer: "Well, do you ever sell something that's not in your computer?"
Me: "Uhm, no."
I STILL had to get a manager involved because she INSISTED that I take the damned thing back. Sheesh.
